Why the Office Cubicles Will Make You Think Again About Your Company
The 1960s saw the onset of the information economy. Manufacturing companies shifted towards mechanization. Workers also moved to offices. Skilled employees were retooling themselves. They are arming new knowledge for work. Employers were hiring new graduates capable mostly of office work.
The office environment had evolved dramatically. The load of work has swung from the production plant to the office. Many of the workers are now processing information instead of the physical products their organization is producing.
As more and more employees were called in to process information, problems arose as to how the personnel is to be organized. How are they to be seated? Are the office tables supposed to be placed side by side? Are they to be placed by columns? These were some of the concerns of the Architects and Interior Designers that were called in to help address the situation.
Luckily, it was also during those times that the “Action Office” was invented. Robert Propst, the inventor, was called to figure out the problems related to the organization of personnel and the related office layout. Robert studied the flow of information. Like how it travels from one worker to the next. How it affects their output, and how it affects the productivity of the company.
Several decades have passed since the action office was invented and several modifications have already been done. In fact, the term action office has already been on the shelves.
Today, we call the “action office” the office cubicles. Some would call it workstations. Others though like labeling it as the office partitions. Whatever name they would like to call it, its functions, its purpose, remains the same.
The purpose of these cubicles or any other office furniture for that matter is to “provide work conducive, workflow centered offices that improve productivity and increase the cordial nature of work relationships.” By the way, Workzone Furnishop has made this their Mission Statement.
Yes, that’s the purpose of the office cubicles. There may be various other reasons or intent but it all boils down to efficiency and productivity.
Now there are some aspects, in fact, detailed things to look at in the design of your office. You’d think about your people and the tasks they are involved with. These things seriously influence how your office will be constructed.
Flow of Information
Well, the first thing you would examine is the flow of information. How is the information passed from one department to the next? Will your sales department be adjacent to the marketing or the accounting department? How about your HR department? Is your purchasing department before the finance?
Freedom Of Movement
Identify if the work of the person who occupies the cubicle involves a lot of coordination with others. His cubicle must be located near the department where he often goes. For example, the sales department will then be close to the shipping group.
The grouping of people whose jobs are directly related will guarantee that papers are handled properly. It will also save time as frequent to and fro is minimized.
Security
Some departments, like the treasury and finance, and to some degree, the purchasing department have confidential information to keep. Their office cubicles will have higher walls. The data handled by these departments need some amount of security. The height of the partition panels for these would ideally be from 150 cm. to 180 cm.
Some offices though with low ceilings would look too crowded with high partition panels. In these cases, you can have lower panels, say 120 cm. You should keep in mind that you should locate these departments toward the rear of the room. This way you could minimize the amount of passing thru traffic.
Privacy
Engineers, architects, programmers, and a lot of creative employees would want to have quiet spaces. One way to afford this is to have these guys in cubicles with closed doors. Of course, an office with a floor-to-ceiling wall would be an ideal one.
If you find this to be expensive, a partition height of 180 cm would be just enough to fend off the noise clutter of the adjoining departments. You also need to have their office tables and cubicles toward the rear of the room.
Size and Shape of Cubicles
Different countries have different standards. Normally in the Philippines, the cubicles for supervisors and managers are 180 cm x 180 cm or 180 cm x 240 cm. If the office space is large, that would be 240 cm x 240 cm.
The height depends mostly on the type of work. High panels if you want more privacy. The standard height for most of the personnel however is usually 120 cm. That is almost at eye level if the person is seated.
The shape could also vary depending on the job position of the personnel and the function. Usually, the administrative function would have the L-Shape type. Management and executive offices would have a closed type U-shape. Then there are the in-line cubicles for most of the call centers.
Aesthetics
Of course, this one should not be left behind. The color, the type, the material of your office cubicles is important. Some would reason about budget when selecting the type of furniture. If there’s little difference, why go for the cheaper type? Choose one that would prop up the image of your company.
The high-end type partition panels are made of laminate and aluminum or a combination of them. Some with glass. Some other types are fabric panels or a combination of fabric with glass. Swatches are available for different types of fabric and colors.
Now you can have any partition panels you’d like for your office. Just go through this website and get the code of the office cubicles and call us now!
